Rolling and forested hills, blue lakes and eye-pleasing valleys comprise the picturesque setting for Newnan and Coweta County. In this community where people wave whether they know you or not, strangers aren't strangers for very long. Only half an hour or so from downtown Atlanta, Coweta County places their bid for offering the best of both worlds.

Newnan's status as a "Hospital City of the Confederacy" spared it many of the ravages of the Civil War, and today, Newnan is known as the "City of Homes". Its numerous turn-of-the-century and antebellum structures add to the city's gracious, small-town charm making it popular among movie and television producers. The television series "I'll Fly Away" was filmed in Newnan, as was the movie "Decoration Day".

More than 87,000 people make Coweta County their home, a population increase of 68 percent since 1980. And the county is not without its celebrities. Country music star Alan Jackson is a Coweta County native. Some of the more recent residents who have chosen to live here include former Braves left fielder Dale Murphy, Steve Bedrosin of the Atlanta Braves and country music star Doug Stone.

Encouraged to locate here by well-planned industrial parks, the county's freeport status and welcoming cooperative local governments, many companies are moving into Coweta County. As the centerpiece of the area's business and industrial community, Shenandoah Industrial and Business Park is a 2,500-acre development that is home to a Kmart distribution center and several Japanese and German manufacturing firms. Dozens of other small to mid-sized companies are also located in the park.

"Excellence" is a word frequently used to describe the Coweta County School System. It is used in reference to goals, achievements, programs, equipment, educators and students. Excellence shows in the students who score above the national average on standardized tests and who regularly win top recognition in state and national academic competitions. The curriculum of Coweta County Schools, both public and private, responds to the needs of the students and of the community.

The Newnan-Coweta cultural scene demonstrates the kind of creativity and adaptability found only in the small towns of America. A one-time warehouse is now a performing and visual arts center. The most elaborate 19th-century Victorian home anywhere is preserved as a Bed and Breakfast, and in the summer, the Court Square, located in the center of Newnan, becomes a concert hall on Thursday evenings.
